The ukulele orchestra is under way! Come join us.

I've given two Saturday workshops in a row to 31 people and nobody died. We have 16 more people in the Thursday night classes and not even a scratch. You should come take a class too and see if you survive.

Check out our newsletter for breaking news.

March 11, 2012

We had a BIG week in ukulele ... and an even bigger one awaits!
  • Thursday night we passed out Shamrock cupcake diplomas to a dozen graduates from the first-ever City of Lakewood ukulele six-week intensive. Congratulations to all of you and remember, you have four free half-hour private lessons waiting for you because I can't read a calendar. Please e-mail me to set up a time to take advantage of those before the end of the year. And of course, RAWK ON!!

  • Also, and equally exciting, nineteen brave people showed up Saturday to check out the ukulele and I think we had a good time getting everybody up and running. If you were in the Saturday class, don't be shy about staying in touch with me. E-mail me and your ukulele world will be filled with rainbows and fun. Stop by the songs page to find more two-chord songs and more popular tunes you can try.

  • We have new classes starting this week.

  • And, in case you haven't heard, the organizational meeting of the Lakewood Orchestra for Ukulele Domination (LOUD) is Sunday. Bring $5 and come check it out.

    WHEN:
    Sunday March 18, 2012 from exactly 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Show up 15 minutes early to help set up. Plan to stay 10 minutes late to un-set up.
Do not arrive after 3 p.m. because the doors will be locked and we'll be rawkin' out.

    WHERE:
    Washington Heights Arts Center
    6375 West 1st Street
    Lakewood, CO 80226 MAP

  • Oh, and there's a couple of fun events coming up. See the newsletter.

The super big totally awesome announcement! Ta da da da da da daaaaaah.....

Put this in your calendar right now!

FIRST REHEARSAL:
Lakewood Orchestra for Ukulele Domination (LOUD)

WHEN:
Sunday March 18, 2012 from exactly 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Show up 15 minutes early to help set up. Plan to stay 10 minutes late to un-set up.
Do not arrive after 3 p.m. because the doors will be locked and we'll be rawkin' out.

WHERE:
Washington Heights Arts Center
6375 West 1st Street
Lakewood, CO 80226 MAP

Put Gary's phone number in your phone now: Three Oh Three 984 - Oh 777
I might not answer, but leave a voicemail or send a text if you're lost. (Don't get lost.)

GET REGISTERED:
Please call Washington Heights (303) 987-5436 this week if you're positive you'll be there and get on the list. There will be a $5 weekly drop-in fee to support the city's facilities and if you go through the official channels they have ways to save you some money. Call them!
You can also pay on the day of rehearsal.

WHAT TO BRING:
Start looking for one song that you love that you also think would be a worthy piece for a large group to present in a new and ukulele-ified way. Try to think of something surprising and genius. Understand that not every song will work, but we'll be going through a collaborative process to create our first show.

Also, talk to other ukulele players you know in the city and encourage them to join our e-mail list so they can see how sweet and fun we are and hopefully we can lure them out of the basement.

We'll be going on a world tour which I presume will include a trip to California to pick up our Grammy award in the distant future, but you don't have to pack quite yet. But do be ready for cookies and dreaming on March 18.

Skills: Be aware that we'll try to accommodate a range of playing abilities. Experienced players should obviously be okay with taking a leadership role and playing solos and duets while newer players should be okay with performing in a supportive role. There will be sheet music (gasp! ... I will help you) and it will require full-on hard-core practice time at home each week. Also be aware we'll often be videotaping and photographing, so if you have an aversion to being famous, this may not be the place for you.

February 26, 2012
Let's see, what's new? I added two songs to the two-chord song book and four songs to the YouTube play-along book. Check out the updates on the songs page.

If you're in the Thursday night class, go to the homework page to be reminded of things you can work on.

And, I just sent out the newsletter. Make sure it showed up in your e-mail, and encourage other people you know who might have an interest in the ukulele to get on our e-mail list. It'll make the world a more ukulele friendly place.

February 21, 2012
Website changes: I moved the chord chart to its own page to try to make this front page easier to read on a cell phone. I have lots more chord shapes to build, but the ones that are there are lovely, right? I've added a menu bar at the top of each page on the website to help you find your way around.

I have the complete list of classes on the left hand column ... even ones that are theoretical at the moment. E-mail me if you have questions. Sign up for some stuff!!

I'm moving all of our songs to their own page. It's a mess right now, but it'll get better.

I've added a preliminary orchestra page. Let's discuss the goals and expectations to see if everybody can live with them.

If you're in the Thursday night class, make sure you've read the newsletter.

February 14, 2012
We have scheduled classes into early summer. Save the dates. See the left hand column for all the details.

Thursday night students: NO PEEKING! I am uploading the beginnings of a two-chord song book and we'll do a few of those songs this week.

I've added lots and lots more chord shapes. See the table to the right to work on whatever ones you need.

I also moved our must-see videos to their own page because the code was freaking out my free web page editor.

***************************************************************************************************

February 13, 2012
I've added chord fingerings for C major, A minor, F major and G major in the right hand column. Do you have them memorized yet? I am adding additional chord fingerings and keys as fast as my old laptop will go.

Also, try playing along to the list of songs in the Key of C on YouTube and keep working on Living with Plastics, Jamaica Farewell, Tip Toe Through the Tulips and My Spaghetti Monster.

February 7, 2012:
Hi everyone! Thank you for being brave and helping build the ukulele program supported by the City of Lakewood's Heritage, Culture & Arts program.

I am starting this page today (and I know it's ugly and I will jazz it up!) to be a collection of things we've covered in the classes and to be a way of (hopefully) gathering those of you who are excited about the ukulele to do something really big.

Please don't hesitate to contact me at garyjugert@yahoo.com and make sure to add my address into your address book, or my return e-mails will end up in your spam box. (The internet thinks I'm trouble.)
